User Generated Content

Harro welcome to the 6th blog-post!! Hope everyone is doing well!! This blog-post includes a mini-parody that my group has created and sharing how UGC have change the way I view and understand mainstream traditional TV.

Mini-parody

My team has created a mini-parody with regards to ideology. Ideology are individual’s beliefs of how certain things are supposed to be, it is the way how society imagine and view the world to be. Our mini-parody includes three ideology that exist in the world.

Firstly, it is about how the world or the society view body image. To maintain a good and slim body image, people force themselves to eat healthy food for every meal. They control themselves from consuming snacks and beverages high in sugar. Why would people torture themselves like that? This is due to the views of the society. The society believes that in order to be slim, one should not consume chips, snacks and anything that is high in salt and sugar. In addition, if one is fat or obese is due to their unhealthy eating habits and they are constantly being judged on.

Secondly, it is about how the society feels that only females can use makeup. For example, in Singapore when a guy is seen wearing makeup, he would be judge as being weird and/or girly. However, there are males around the world that loves to wear or wants try makeup. Is makeup only for females? Both males and females are humans and thus should be given equal opportunities to enhance their physical image true the use of makeup.

Lastly, the scene is about how the world view prostitutes. Prostitutes are being viewed as dirty and are being looked down around the world. My team view prostitutes from a different perspective. We felt that most prostitutes resort to working as prostitutes either they are being force to or they are facing life challenges or difficulties that we do not understand. Personally, I believe that they have their own reasons on why they choose to step on the path of being a prostitute, and I believe it was not an easy decision. Hence, I feel that society should not look down or judge prostitutes. Do not misunderstand, I am not encouraging people to step on the path on being a prostitute, I am just voicing my opinion that prostitute should not be look down on.

How user generated content have changed the way I view and understand mainstream traditional TV?

User Generated Content (UGC) are uncensored content that are being shared, posted and created by online users like us. Examples of such content are videos, audios, pictures and blog-posts that we post online. Usually such content is being shared on platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and WordPress.

UGC produces content that is different from the content that is produce on traditional TV. UCG includes individuals or the public’s opinions, feelings and thoughts about certain issue. Anyone can voice out and share their perspective of certain issue online freely. As for the content produce on mainstream traditional TV in Singapore, usually the content is being censored. Reason being, media in Singapore is being controlled by the government. The government has the authority to choose whether if certain information can be shared to the citizens and the world, hence certain content would be filtered before being generated.

As shared from my 4th blog-post on ‘Does it matter who own the media?’, there are both advantages and disadvantages when the media is being controlled by the government. Advantage of government-controlled media is that it plays a part in preventing unpleasant conflicts or misunderstandings. Disadvantages would be that the content may be sugar coated and it will be a challenge for us to differentiate whether if the content we are viewing is the truth or not.

Since UGC are information provided and shared by individuals, since it is not censored, I feel that the content contains more informative content as compared to mainstream traditional TV. Examples of some people who generates UGC are Xia Xue, Dee Kosh and Amos Yee. They have posted videos on YouTube sharing their personally opinions and expressing their feelings about certain issues. In addition, these you-tubers often express their thoughts bravely, they have no fear about how people will judge them. These are content that we will not be able to get by watching traditional TV and thus presence of UGC is good for us to have a second view about certain issue.

In conclusion, UGC provides more personal views, opinions and feelings of individuals and traditional TV provide us with like a general information about certain situation. I feel that it is good to obtain information from both UGC and traditional TV to have a more objective perspective of certain situation. This is because since both UGC and traditional TV provides different perspective, one’s view can be subjective by just obtaining information from either one. Therefore, I feel that it is good that everyone can express their opinions and feelings freely online.

I have come to the end of this post. Thank you for taking your time to read. Have a nice day!

  1. Hi Yu Ning. I really enjoyed your group’s video on ideologies. It shows the different issues that is being faced by many. The first ideology about how people try to restrict their food intake cause of the idea of wanting to be like models is something that is happening daily. It needs to be talked about more often. People have this idea of what is perfect in their head due to what social media shows us. To me, what is more important is for people to be healthy. It is okay to indulge in food here and there. Having dieted myself, the pain that comes from binge eating after restricting/starving is hard to cope with. Instead, people should strive to follow a well-balanced diet instead.

For your second scene, it is true that there are gender stereotypes about makeup. The make-up industry is female dominated and it is a norm in society that only women wear makeup. This thinking should be erased. There are also many men who appreciate the art of make up and anyone should we able to wear make-up without any fear. The society needs to understand that if a man likes wearing makeup it does not define their gender identity and sexual orientation. I wish that people were more accepting of people’s way of expressing themselves.

I loved your last scene the most. Few days ago, I shared a quote on Facebook about how people can be such hypocrites. The quote says “You practice adultery, but you want a faithful woman. You follow naked women accounts but you think they deserve no respect.” It is sad what our world has come to. Many are so quick to judge than to understand someone. I do agree with what you stated on your post that the girls who chose this path do have a reason. Everyone deserves respect and the society should be more respectful to people’s decisions as we never know what they are facing. Your group’s view on this topic really brought a smile to my face, thank you for that! 😊

User-generated content (UGC) has allowed many of us to express our views freely online. I do agree with you that UGC has given us a second view about things. Traditional media is very particular about the content that is being posted. With UGC, we are able to hear other people’s perspectives and we are able to read up more on things we are passionate about. The traditional television only gives us one view on things, while UGC provides with many alternative views and gives us an opportunity to form our own opinions on topics. 😊

  2. Hey Yu Ning!

Congratulations on surviving this 2 months journey of blogging. We made it! I enjoyed watching your team’s video, especially seeing Zeena’s overly-animated facial expression. I second your team’s collective opinion on prostitutes too. Having to work as one does not make one lesser of a human being, right? Additionally, you are right too about the lack of liberal content in our government-controlled media environment. While UGC may provide alternative source of media outlet, I, however think that they sometimes lack in credibility. Most opinions are not justified with facts and hence, may be far from the truth. But of course, these influencers are entertaining to watch!

    See ya in class!~

  3. Hello Yu Ning!

I absolutely love your group’s video! Extremely inventive and engaging! It additionally depicted the different ideologies well with a touch of humour. I do agree with you on how individuals are excessively centered around what the general public figures they ought to resemble going on weight control plans and truly controlling oneself to not eat what they want to just because the society says so. Additionally on the part on prostitutes, I believe that individuals who works in that industry have their very own explanations behind their choices. Truth be told, some of them might want to get out but don’t know how. It additionally doesn’t help that the general public is so judgemental towards those individuals.

With respect to your thoughts on UGC, I agree that UGC makes a platform that is loaded with opportunity where anybody can post and watch anything they like and it is of comfort and convenience. Television is constrained by the government but it is protected yet safe. Individuals probably won’t most likely watch what they like and go to UCG to fullfill their needs.

Really enjoyed reading your post and watching your group’s video! 😊
